How AI Engines Create and Credit Answers

Joshua Lee | 21 October, 2025 | 3 minute read | Blog

Not all AI tools work the same way. When you ask something in ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, or Perplexity, they might all give you slightly different answers, and some will show where their information came from while others won’t.

As always, we’re offering a simple, straightforward look at why AI engines work differently when generating and citing in their answers.

How AI Creates Answers

AI tools don’t actually “think” like people do, they build answers in one of two main ways. Some rely on what they’ve already learned, while others go online to look things up in real time. Here’s how each approach works and why it makes a difference to the kind of answers you get.

AI tools often use two main ways to come up with answers:

From ‘Memory’

Some AIs, like ChatGPT, rely mostly on what they’ve already “learned” from large amounts of text, books, and websites during training.

  • Good side: They answer fast and smoothly.
  • Downside: They can be wrong or out of date, because they don’t check the internet when you ask.

From Live Searches

Other AIs, like Perplexity or Google’s Gemini, look up real websites before answering.

  • Good side: They can show where the information came from, often with links.
  • Downside: The sources they choose might not always be reliable or the same ones you’d pick yourself.

How Popular AI Platforms Handles Their Sources

Each AI tool has its own way of finding and sharing information. Some pull from what they already “know,” while others search the internet in real time. Here’s a quick look at how the most popular platforms handle their sources and citations.

1 . ChatGPT

Usually writes from what it already knows. If it browses the web (in some versions), it may show links, but not always.

2. Perplexity

Always searches the web first and shows its sources. Great for when you want to see where facts came from.

3. Gemini (Google)

Built into Google’s search system, so it often shows real links or snippets from websites.

4. Claude (Anthropic)

Normally writes from what it knows, but can search the web if you turn that on.

Why The Differences Matter

Knowing how each AI tool works helps you choose the right one for the job. Some are great at creative writing, while others are better at finding recent or reliable information. Understanding these differences means you’ll know when to trust an answer, and when to double-check the source.

  • If you want quick, creative writing, tools like ChatGPT are good.
  • If you want up-to-date facts, use ones that search the web like Perplexity or Gemini.
If you need to trust the info, always check where it came from — or make sure the AI shows sources.

The Bottom Line

AI tools don’t all “think” or “research” the same way. Some rely on memory, others look things up. Some show sources, others don’t.

So when you use AI, it helps to ask: Where did this answer come from, and can I check it myself?
