Where Do Google Search Ads Appear

Ella PybusElla Pybus | 31 December, 2025 | 3 minute read | Digital Marketing, PPC

If you’re running Google Ads but don’t know exactly where your ads show up, you’re already at a disadvantage.

‘Where do Google Search Ads appear?” is one of the most common (and most important) questions people ask when they’re trying to understand paid search

At a basic level, Google Search Ads appear when someone actively searches for something related to your business. But the where, how, and why behind those placements is what separates wasted spend from profitable campaigns.

In this blog, we’ll break down exactly where Google Search Ads appear, how those placements work, and why understanding them helps you make better decisions with your budget, even if you’re just getting started.

Where do Google Search Ads appear?

Google Search Ads appear directly on Google’s search results pages, the page you see after typing a query into Google and hitting enter.

These ads are triggered by keywords. When someone searches for something that matches (or closely relates to) your chosen keywords, Google decides whether your ad is eligible to show.

If it is, your ad can appear in one of two main places:

  • At the top of the search results
  • At the bottom of the search results

They look similar to organic listings, but they’re marked with a small “sponsored” label.

This matters because search ads don’t interrupt people, they meet them at the exact moment of intent.

Top vs Bottom Placements: What’s the Difference?

Ads at the top of the page appear before any organic results. These are the most visible and typically get the highest click-through rates.

Bottom of page ads appear after the organic listings. They’re still relevant, but usually attract less attention.

It is important to point out that you don’t choose whether your ad appears at the top or bottom.

Google decides based on:

  • Your bid
  • Your ad quality
  • Your expected relevance to the search

This is why better ads often beat bigger budgets.

Beyond Google: Other Places Search Ads Can Appear

While most people only think Google search ads can appear on search results. This isn’t right, they can appear across Google’s Search network

This includes:

  • Google Search
  • Google Maps
  • Search partner websites (depending on your settings)

For example:

  • A “coffee shop near me” search may trigger ads inside Google Maps
  • A service-based search might show ads across partner search engines

The key thing to understand is:

Search ads always appear in response to active searches; they don’t just show randomly.

Do Google search ads appear on websites or social media?

No, and this is where people often get confused.

Google search ads:

  • Do not appear on websites as banners
  • Do not appear on YouTube videos
  • Do not appear on social media feeds

Those placements are for Google Display Ads, not Search Ads.

Search Ads are text-based and intent-driven. They exist purely to capture demand that already exists.

Our final thoughts

Understanding where Google Search Ads appear sounds basic, but it’s foundational.

Once you grasp that:

  • They show only during active searches
  • Placement is earned, not chosen
  • Visibility is driven by relevance, not just spend

…you start thinking differently about keywords, ads, and landing pages.
